Zebra printer prints faint: raise the darkness

Guide · Updated

Steps

  1. Print a test label at the current settings and keep it to compare.
  2. Raise the darkness one step and print again. Repeat in small steps until text and bars are solid black.
  3. If more darkness does not help, lower the print speed one step and print again.
  4. Check that the labels match the printer: direct thermal labels print with no ribbon, and thermal transfer labels need a ribbon loaded.
  5. Clean the printhead following Zebra’s instructions for the model, then print one more test label.
  6. Note the darkness and speed that work for this roll.

Why labels print faint

Darkness sets how much heat the printhead uses, and speed sets how long each line gets that heat. Too little heat, too much speed, a dirty printhead or the wrong label stock all leave grey text and broken barcodes.

Too dark is a problem too

Very high darkness can blur barcodes so they no longer scan. Stop raising it once text is solid and a barcode scans cleanly.
