Print to a Zebra printer from a Mac with no driver

Guide · Updated

Steps

  1. Check that the printer accepts ZPL. Zebra lists the printer languages in each model’s specifications.
  2. Pick one connection: the printer’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, or a USB cable to the Mac.
  3. Load the labels, close the printer and switch it on.
  4. Open the label in an app that sends ZPL straight to the printer, so macOS needs no driver and no setup utility.
  5. Print one label and check its size and darkness before you print more.

Why no driver is needed

A Zebra printer that accepts ZPL receives each label as a short text program and draws it itself. An app that writes ZPL and sends it over the network, Bluetooth LE or USB never goes through the macOS print system, so there is nothing to install.

If the printer does not respond

  • On Wi-Fi, check that the Mac and the printer are on the same network.
  • On Bluetooth LE, check that the printer’s Bluetooth is on and that no other phone or computer is connected to it.
  • On USB, try another cable or port, and check that the printer is on and its lid is closed.
